D. AVRAMOPOULOS: We met today with the President of the 'Democratiki Simahia' party, Ms Dora Bakoyannis, whom I informed on all issues pertaining to the operation of our country’s defence system. Given her former experience in foreign affairs, we extended our discussion on matters pertaining to the operational activity of the Armed Forces in the region, as well as to matters touching the generalized financial crisis and in what way and to what extent we could be affected.

I told Ms Bakoyannis that, fortunately, during this circumstance the Armed Forces maintain a very high level of effectiveness. On the other hand, the entire system is at operational readiness and, as far as this subject is concerned, the Greek citizens can feel safe.

During all these years, through the sacrifices of the Hellenic people, our country has equipped the Armed Forces with whatever best is offered at global level. However, all these must be kept in the long term and this is ensured with the policy implemented by the Ministry of National Defence. I thank her for her visit.

D. BAKOYANNIS: I would like to thank Mr. Avramopoulos for the briefing that was presented to me. The reason of my visit here is a concern I have due to an increased tension in the area of the Aegean. Mr. Avramopoulos presented to me a complete briefing on the matter and we had the chance to discuss on our further concern for the financial status of the Armed Forces’ personnel.

The information I have by Mr. Avramopoulos is that it has been currently agreed to keep the special salary rate, however what we must all strive for is to relieve particularly the lower-ranking officers and the flying officers, during a very difficult and exceptionally demanding period for everybody.
